Jeongjusa Temple (Ganghwa) 본문
Jeongjusa Temple (Ganghwa)
Located in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon
A thousand-year-old temple situated to the east of Mani Mountain.
Jeongsu Temple (精修寺), located on the eastern foothills of Mani Mountain in Ganghwa Island, was founded by Master Hoejeong in the 8th year of Queen Seondeok's reign (639). Along with Jeondeungsa and Bomunsa, it is one of the representative temples of Ganghwa. After paying homage at the Chamseongdan altar, Master Hoejeong observed the eastern terrain of Mani Mountain and deemed it a suitable place for Buddhists to attain samadhi, thus establishing the temple and naming it Jeongsu Temple.
Later, in the 5th year of King Sejong's reign (1423), Master Hamheo rebuilt the temple. Upon noticing a spring of clear water emerging from the west side of the building, he changed the name from Jeongsu Temple (精修寺) to Jeongsu Temple (淨水寺). From the 14th year of King Heonjong's reign (1848), female monks began to reside there, repeatedly renovating and restoring the temple while enshrining paintings.
During the restoration work in 1957, a construction document from the 15th year of King Sukjong's reign (1689) was discovered in the Daeungbojeon hall. According to this document, it is recorded that the temple was rebuilt in the 5th year of King Sejong's reign. The hall has a front width of three bays and a side width of four bays, with a gable roof that resembles the character "人" when viewed from the side. The roof is supported by decorative brackets that are only placed on top of the columns, following the Jushimpo style, which results in the front and back of the hall appearing different from each other.
