Reeds and Bakdal birch

 

 

 

Suddenly the wind blew violently.

 

Because of that, the Bakdal birch was uprooted.

 

And then I fell headlong into the stream.

 

Cried the Bakdal birch, which had been floating on the water for some time.

 

 

"Hey, reeds!"

 

 

The bakdal birch asked the reeds.

 

 

"You're so weak, How come your roots didn't get pulled out by the strong wind?"

 

 

The reeds answered in chorus.

 

 

"You were uprooted because you fought against the wind.

 

But when the wind blows, we don’t fight, we just bow our heads."

 

 

 

 

 

갈대와 박달나무

 

 

갑자기 바람이 거세게 휙 불었습니다.

그 바람에 박달나무가 뿌리째 뽑혔습니다.

그러고는 시냇물 속으로 곤두박질치고 말았습니다.

한참을 물 위에 떠서 둥둥 떠내려가던 박달나무가 소리쳤습니다.

 

"어이, 갈대들아!"

 

박달나무는 갈대들에게 물었습니다.

 

"너희는 약하기 짝이 없는데 어떻게 강한 바람에도 뿌리가 뽑히지 않았니?"

 

갈대들이 합창하듯 대답했습니다.

 

"당신은 바람에 맞서 싸웠기 때문에 뿌리가 뽑힌 거예요.

하지만 우리는 바람이 불면 싸우지 않고 고개를 숙인답니다."
